Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. It’s a political, administrative, economic, scientific and cultural centre of the country. The city stretches along the Dnipro for more than 50 km. It is divided into 10 administrative districts.

Kiev History

 

Kiev has fifteen hundred years old history. On more than one occasion the city was razed to the ground by foreign invaders, but again and again it rose from its ashes.

It was More than 1.500 years ago the city emerged on the Dnipro’s banks. During the 9th-11th centuries Kiev was one of the largest cities of Europe, the capital of Kiev Rus, a mighty state with a highly developed culture. When the black cloud of Tatar-Mongol invasion had approached, Kiev, together with other cities of Kiev Rus, turned out to be the shield that saved the West-European civilization from destruction. After this destructive invasion , Kiev could not recover for a long time. It was seized by Lithuanian and Polish feudal lords, plundered by the Crimean Tartars. But kiev has never been conquered by invaders. The well-known uprisings have been taking place here many times.

Kiev played the leading role in the in the liberation war of the Ukrainian people in 1648 – 1654.

During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945Kiev appeared again as an indestructible fortress on the enemy's way.There are heroes who gave up their lives fightening for the city slumbering in Vechnaya Slava park on the high hills of Dnipro.

The most ancient historical monument preserved till our days from the Kiev Rus times is St. Sophia’s Cathedral . This majestic work of the ancient Rus architecture was built in 1017 – 10 37 by the Kiev Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

Plenty of people also visit St.Andrew’s Church constructed after the design of the famous architect B.Rastrelli. Many visitors are attracted by St. Cyrill Church built in the 12th century.

Kiev Petro Mohyla Academy in Podol , theTaras Shevchenko University and the State Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts. are the buildings of a great architectural interest.

 

Kiev is known as the most green city. Modern Kiev covers an area of over 80,000 hectares, more than half of which is taken up by woods, public gardens, parks and tree-lined boulevards.Spring and summer colour Kiev parks and gardens in amazing arrays of crimson. The beuty of the city wakes up in autumn, dressed out in flaming rowan-berries hanging from the branches of trees covered with leaves and huge amount of sparky brown chestnut trees. In winter the streets and parks of Kiev are covered with soft snow, the floes on the river are sparking in the sun.

Each street, every small corner of Kiev are witnesses to many past and recent events. One of the most ancient cities of Ukraine has much to show and tell its guests.

 

Kiev is scientific and cultural center of the country. The academy of Sciences with its research intititutes is situated over here.
